Serena van der Woodsen is Gossip Girl‘s bad girl turned – somewhat – good. Serena is beautiful and is often told that she gets by on her looks rather than striving towards her full potential. She comes from a very affluent family, dating back to her great great grandfather who formed a Dutch trading company. Her style is a lot like her personality – relaxed and carefree. In a Rolling Stone article Blake Lively described her character as being like herself, saying,
“I make Serena a little more goofy, just because that’s how I am.”
Lively brings a more Californian vibe to the role. Since Serena has originally lived in the upper east side, it is more likely that she would be more uptight, just like Blair. This change helps to differentiate the two and add more personality to Serena.
Serena’s fashion choices are also very different from her best friend. She likes tight and short skirts and dresses, instead of the flowy, mid-length skirts Blair chooses. Serena uses large bags and loves large statement necklaces. She has a wide variety of boots, usually knee length and loves a good pair of jeans.
