During an interview with Alec Baldwin, on his Here’s The Thing podcast Jan. 21, Lena Dunham had some choice words for international sensation Rihanna. The Girls creator, and recent Golden Globe winner, criticized Ri’s choice to reunite with her abusive ex, Chris Brown, after their now infamous fight in which Brown nearly beat Rihanna to death.
Lena describes her feelings of disappointment over Rihanna’s choice, as she sees her as a role model to her legions of fans. Lena explained to Baldwin:
“[Fame is] an amazing thing and it’s a platform that you have to take seriously. Which is why sometimes, it’s like. . . I used to be really into Rihanna, that pop star, and then it’s like — again, I don’t want to ever throw stones from my glass house — but I follow her on Instagram and I just think about how many little girls beyond what I could even comprehend are obsessed with Rihanna.”
Dunham continued to explain her concern:
“Like, you know, she left Barbados, she’s had this amazing career, she’s won a Grammy. . . She’s talented. And then she gets back together with Chris Brown and posts a million pictures of them smoking marijuana together on a bed. And it cracks my heart in half in a way that makes me feel like I’m 95 years old.”
Dunham went on to comment on her own status as a role model and how it has affected the way she acts in her daily life:
“I had to become more conscious about what I say and what I promote, not in a way that stifles me, but just in a way where I realize now that there are 17-year-old girls who come up to me and tell me that the show means a lot to them.”
Lena is never shy about giving her opinions, just check out Girls for a taste. In the interview with Baldwin, she also divulged that Girls has been renewed for a third season which will begin filming in March. Perhaps we will see a side story based on her strong feelings about Rihanna? What do you think about Lena’s criticism?
