British actor Charlie Hunnam has dropped out of the much-anticipated film version of the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey. The reason given is that shooting for his TV show, Sons of Anarchy, interfered with scheduling.
The studio behind the film released a statement that read: “The filmmakers of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”
Almost immediately after being named the actor who would play Christian Grey, he and actress Dakota Johnson (who is set to play Anastasia Steele) received tremendous criticism. Some fans of the trilogy even went so far as to begin an online petition begging for the roles to be re-cast. The petition was signed by over 80,000 angry fans.
Even with all the criticism, Charlie seemed excited to tackle the role, “As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us. It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”
However, it has been rumoured Charlie decided he wasn’t prepared for the same kind of fame that Robert Pattinson experienced after appearing in the Twilight movies.
Fifty Shades of Grey is scheduled to begin shooting November 5th for release in theaters August 1, 2014.
